- The Courtney Anne Diacont Memorial Foundation Essay due by April 30, 2011
Hello Aviation Explorers:
The Courtney Anne Diacont Memorial Foundation was established as a tribute to our daughter, Courtney, who lost her battle with colon cancer at the age of eighteen. Courtney was a member of the Explorer Post Aviation group prior to her passing. Though her life was short, through her spirit and determination she greatly affected the lives of those who knew her and also a great many who only know her story. Providing educational scholarships and working to raise awareness of colorectal cancer are some of the way the Foundation hopes to keep Courtney’s memory alive. Our hope is that through these efforts, she will continue to have a positive effect in the community.
Courtney displayed amazing courage, strength and determination in the face of adversity throughout her illness. In recognition of her character, the Foundation awards educational scholarships to students who have also faced challenges and continue to live life to the fullest. The Courtney Anne Diacont Memorial Foundation would like to offer a $2500 scholarship to one student from the explorer post or CAPS who wishes to pursue post secondary education. Students wishing to be considered for this scholarship should submit an essay describing a challenge they have encountered during their high school career and explain how they have worked to overcome it. Essays should be submitted to the Foundation at the below email addresses by April 30, 2011.
Courtney’s wish was that more people know the signs and symptoms of colorectal cancer so early symptoms will not be missed. With that in mind, we are working on educational projects aimed at raising awareness of this cancer and the extreme importance of early detection. While colorectal cancer is primarily thought of as an older person’s illness, it can and does affect young people. Found in its earliest stage, colon cancer is 90% curable!
